The Medium wrap-up

Hi, Happy New Year. I’m back to business…

The Medium closed at the beginning of December and along with being more successful commercially than I could have expected, was a totally positive experience. I received such warm, supportive feedback and such warm support from Bett Gallery itself, I really can’t imagine now what it was about a commercial gallery/artist relationship that put me off for so long.

Here follows some installation shots, bit daggy but proof that it ever happened and a good record of the hang.

Thank you to all who got there to check it out, your comments passed back to me via gallery staff have really left me buoyed to keep moving forward with this PhD thingo.

EDIT: BTW If you didn’t get to the show and want to see the video, a poorly compressed (sorry – it’s all that ‘fizzing’ – compression says ‘no’.) upload of the video can be seen here .

‘The Medium’ opening Nov 9 @ Bett Gallery, Hobart

Opening 6pm on Friday, November 9 in the rear space at Bett Gallery and continuing until December 1,
The Medium will be my first ever commercial show and I’m very excited.

Consisting of 2 animations and a some choice frames from the most recent, it’s been keeping me busier than just about anything I’ve ever done, but it’s ready now.

Come on over.

Four monkeys

See? I do more than just browse the interwebs for videos… I made four monkeys!
They are, once again, gocco prints on recycled fabric and while I was wondering if anyone would even want them, before I could even post this blog – the yellow one sold and I’ve been asked to hold the purple until someones payday this week. How awesome!

Anyhoo – I was going to get brave and do a trot to a few shops around town this week to see if they would like to stock monkeys and some squeaky pigs and goats. Any suggestions as to where would be good and how much I should charge?

Or should I just sell them on the interwebs? Using Etsy? Or another storefront system? Or should I just suck it up because I actually know what I’m doing a bit with web design and just build my own webstore…?

Hey, peoples. Hey, peoples who sell things and have a clue. Help out a gal who doesn’t have a clue about making a buck out of making things?

Your advice in the comments please…

Green silk, vintage buttons and a grand final

…well… silk and wool. I made Cazzy a pair of slippers out of this stuff too, such a pretty colour and really warm. Yes, it’s yet another neckwarmer but this time really only a moss stitch, rectangular mini-scarf with a buttonhole knitted into it. I like the way it looks like a big collar but I’m quite bored with looking at my own head. I must start making things to actually flog and then I can justify nagging my friends into being stunt necks for photos.

Check out that button though! I’ve been carrying around that Bambi button for years but I never really make anything that calls for buttons so small. In the end I took a leaf out of the books of those gels who make button-y jewellery and just stacked up a few all together. Nice huh?

Trivia fact: I know 4 individuals – all women, all sensible stand-up gals and all adorable – who have a phobia of buttons. Dear ladies – I mention this not because I think you are freaks (we all have our phobias – as it turns out I have a gazillion of my own) but because I find those odds so bloody remarkable.

I knitted the bulk of this during the Grand Final yesterday, propped up with pillows on the bed with a kir royale to one side of me, texting game critique back and forth with my fellow Hawks fan, Susie (in Perth) as Hawthorn came galloping home and Roy and HG shouted from my wee radio, urging Geelong (the Cats) to ‘Get off the kitty litter!’ and referring to my own victorious team colours of brown and gold as ‘the poo and the wee’. I’ve supported Hawthorn (limply – only really tuning in towards the end of the season every year) since I was a child and have never ceased to be mortified by their colour scheme.

I must confess that the Hawks didn’t really win through sheer sporting brilliance but because for a large part of the game, Geelong couldn’t kick a goal for quids. Hawthorn players seemed to keep being sent off to have their feet glued back on and sure enough they must have used 5-minute aryldite because pretty much all but one made it back onto the field at some point. The one who didn’t behaved like an arse, hooting and hollering on his crutches when he got his premiership medal too. I say – if you didn’t touch the ball, keep it down a bit, eh? But ne’er the less – good on you lads, good on you.

There was a confusing moment during the half-time sprints when I looked up at the telly from my knitting to see a rep from every team running away from a giant disposable razor. Turns out the sprints were sponsored by Gillette. Huh.

Guppies – retrospective blog #2

They got finished and finally went up for sale at the 6A Art Fete about 36 hours before we flew away. They sold well and I was pretty happy with them really. I am extra-keen to do a second run of brooches now on another subject. Not sure what this will be yet but you may notice I have kept the name SKIRT after all.
Online store coming soon. I think it may be the focus of May 08.

Twinset

Lookie. A sneaky-peek at the first new video work shot for 2008. A long way from finished but as you can see a big widescreen two-parter.

It’s for Victor Medrano’s Lucha Libre show at Inflight in March. As I will be kicking up the slush in Montreal at that time I had to get cracking NOW.

The chap with me is the everfresh Witchlord Andrew Harper (fellow Tasmanian artist, performer and shit-stirrer) who kindly agreed to wrestle me for an evening. We didn’t hurt each other once. This is a happy outcome but also quite amazing really.

I am proud to say he and his own work currently feature in the latest edition of the Fortean Times in an article on occult film. Nestled up next to Jodorowsky and Kenneth Anger, no less. Impressive connections n’est pas?

Harps will also be performing a new work called ACRID at 6A this Friday (Jan 25 from 8pm). Matty and Mr Scott Cotterell will be backing him audio-wise but the planning seems a bit hush-hush so it will all be news to me when it goes off. I imagine there will be some cursing (not cussing… well, actually…) of a Brian Blessed-ish volume and something to do with film and something to do with wee. But I may be wrong… Actually come to think of it , I reckon I may be the first person ever to get Harpie in to speak some lines and then direct him to remain subdued… Yay for me… breaking the rules…

Art and some vibes – 6A Friday. It’s good for you.
